more Commercial boards

Well, this wraps up the commercial half of my "mentor-ship." Intended to be read top-to-bottom, left-to-right.

The Mitsubishi commercial has a father and son going into a dealership to find a car. They come across a Lancer and it's pretty much a done deal from there. What follows is all the excitement and wonder that comes with the prospect of purchasing a new car.

The Beer commercial shows a couple caught in the middle of an earthquake. They run out but the girlfriend is concerned for her cat's safety. The dutiful boyfriend returns to the kitchen where he discovers the cat and a beer. While weighing his priorities, a gas stove falls and the broken gas line causes an explosion which sends the boyfriend flying out the front door. The girlfriend again asks about the cat who, as we discover, is clinging to the boyfriend's back charred but (presumably) alive.

Quakerstate Oil

Some boards for a commercial involving cars and people succeeding. Meant to be read top to bottom, left to right. Commercial starts with a happy guy in a mustang and eventually shifts to a little vignette where some dude graduates and seals some deal with a bunch of construction guys. Overall, I'm happy with these boards because I was able to do them relatively quickly and I think the frames read well enough. I will post my scene next, after I get around to organizing the frames.

More storyboards and sketches

Here's some more storyboard stuff that I'm posting so that I can monitor my progress through this mentor-ship thing. The one with snakes is for a film called "FANGS." The premise simply involved teenagers stranded on an island that was full of snakes. Me and four other students were assigned different chunks of the script. I was honored to be put in charge of the final action sequence but was a bit ashamed when I discovered that, of the 60-70 frames I completed, only this 16 frame sequence came out okay, and even it is in dire need of an establishing shot among other things. In any case, first time working with a director. I wonder if the movie ever got off the ground.

My first assignment with Mark was one that I chose to do: Medieval Times. I felt like a total bad ass while I was drawing these. That is, until I scanned them. I don't think they're bad, but they sure are dirty. I did everything I could to get rid of all the noise but, alas, it remains. Anyway, this is the best I've got thus far. I'll be finishing up a 4 page action sequence tomorrow (80-90 frames) so hopefully I draw them well.

More Work in Progress

More updates. Got the cocktail party to about 65-70% complete. Still need to brush up on the main characters and add more background characters for depth. I need to get all this stuff cleaned up and solid by the end of June.

More Work in Progress

"You're saying yes all the f___in' time, yet nothing's DONE"!

That's what Gordon Ramsay would say to me if he could see me now. So yea. One semi-finished illustration and one WIP. I am planning on adding more gawking people to the first one and fixing the perspective a bit more. I struggled with this one because it reads more like an ad. I think the third one will be more successful since it's just a big cocktail-scandal party.

Pride

This was the second illustration for my class. The theme is pride. This isn't quite done, nor are the last 3 or 4 illustrations I've done. I need to set aside a month after this semester is over to finalize everything. But here's the progress.

New Semester

Wow, an update. So these are a couple projects I was working on for two separate classes that still need work. My theme for my portfolio class is tentatively "fashion illustration" though I've resolved that it is, in fact, taking cliche fashion illustration scenarios and putting a twist on them. It's true that fashion illustration is usually about the clothes and what not, so what I'm doing is more about the lifestyle. But rather than promoting the lifestyle to the point where it's nauseatingly glamorous, I'm trying to illustrate that high status doesn't exempt people from being people. There will be 5 total when all is said and done.
